Conflict, age & power in North East Africa : age systems in transition edited by Eisei Kurimoto & Simon Simonse by - 5 copies available in shelf 1
Series: . 12579 Conflict, Age and power in North East Africa: Age systems in Transition (Eastern African Studies/Elsei Kurimoto 1998 KURIMOTO, ELSEI Conflict, Age and power in North East Africa: Age systems in Transition (Eastern African Studies The author poses a question ``Are Age systems merely `idiological formations' or do they organize societies for conflict?" He argues that in post -colonial North East Africa, with its recent history of national politcal conflict, civil and regional wars, time has come to re-emphasize the military and politiccal relevance of Age-systems. He concurs that Age-systems are involved in the competition for power. They are part of an institutional complex which makes societies fir to wage war. This book contains new information about Age-systems in North Eastern Africa. It sets them firmly in a wider, spatial and temporal context than previous studies of single socities at a single point in time. Topics examined are: regional Age-systems which cross linguisitic and political boundaries, the decline and extinction of some Age-systems and the persistence of others, the way women are included or excluded from the sytems, and the politicization and militarization of age-systems in national political conflicts and civil wars.
