For the purposes of this lesson the deignation "Middle East," unless otherwise qualified, is intended also to include that portion of North Africa generally encompassing the Mediterranean littoral and which is commonly refered to as the "Magreb" region. In addition, the rgion more commonly known as Southwest Asia or Persian Gulf should be included. Finally, the Moslem republics formerly belonging to the U.S.S.R should be considered here also. Two maps are presented to fully display the Middle East Region.
