Military Theory: Concept, Structure and Problems In this volume, the term ``Military Theory" is used to include both the study of military affairs and its findings in the form of concepts, categories, propositions, laws and theories. There have been many changes not only in this analytical apparatus but also in the very conception of military theory: the subject of the discipline, its scope, structure and place among social sciences have altered greatly with time. The changes in men's ideas about military affairs have reflected changes in the reality which these ideas concern. During its earlier history, military theory was the theory of war or, strictly speaking, the theory of international war. As a rule, military Theories in the West have directly addressed themselves to the question of what structure a science of military affairs should have. At times they have touched on the subject in discussiing the relation between war and politics, strategy and policy, or the place of militaryt theory among the social sciences; but for the most part their views on the elements of military theory must be inferred from their studies-their choice of problems, their definitions of ``war", strategy"' `` strategic studies" ' and similar terms' the arrangement of their studies, etc. Owing to the limited scope of this study, the author only gives a few examples in this volume.
